I left with no warning and for a really long time! Sorrrrrrrrry about that! I've been abroad for the past semester, in Ghana (if you're interested: blog + photos).
Anyway, I thought maybe I'd try to breathe life back into this blog, with an update! I've been staying in my parents house in NJ (God, I hate this state). But despite the less than ideal location, (perhaps, because of?) I've been up to some crafty things!
-embroidery: so far I've only done french knots and slip stitches, but I made a sweet shirt from only those two stitches. The shirt was one that I bleach stenciled (poorly, might I add) when I was in high school (about 3 1/2 years ago!) and never wore because since it was a light pink shirt, it was near impossible to make out what the stencil (taken from an old concert poster of The Lucksmiths). So I embroidered the edges and thus, legibility!
-making yarn from t-shirts: this involves cutting and sewing together strips of t-shirts, very simple! i hope the scarf turns out well!
-keeping a creative journal: this has been great so far, I've been writing creative goals, accomplishments, supplies that I want/have, ideas, random lyrics and quotes and I've been doodling and sketching (which I am not usually in the habit of doing, so this is really good progress for me!). I definitely recommend this!
-cooking new things: I've made pancakes, guacamole, and tofu stir fry in the past week!
Pictures of the yarn and the shirt.
and finally, I cut myself new bangs:
pheww! what a week!
And of course all I can think about is which crafts to bring with me!
I think I'm finally going to teach myself to embroider and purl.
I've got to go pack and read SDS proposals (I'm going to Detroit for the National SDS Conference)!
I wish I had a decent working camera so I could post pictures of what I'm starting but I'm working on it! I'm supposed to pick up a camera from Freecycle on Monday, so hopefully it'll work! I got one for five bucks from someone on craigslist (who said it would work) and then I get home, put batteries in it and nothing. So at least this time I won't be paying anything other than metro fare!
So anywho! I made these cool buttons from an old flyer for this weird anarchist (or psuedo-anarchist) fantasy game that sounded like something out of Anarchy in the Age of Dinosaurs . Weird. And the flyer also had a zine-like, black-and-white, cut-and-paste style. So of course I had to do something with it! Ta-da, buttons!
Cross stitch is something that I have been meaning to start for years now. I had the hoop, embroidery floss, tapestry needle, special cloth, and instruction booklet for a year and a half now, but I was just too intimidated, too busy and too full of excuses to just do it. But there's something about summer that just made me get off my butt and do it! So now I am working on a cross stitch patch that says, "FEMINIST". I'm really excited!
I'll post pictures as soon as humanly possible, promise!
I've been working on lots of fun projects! (My camera's broke at the moment or I'd post pics.) I finished a canvas tote with a felt applique moster (with speech bubble that says, "grrr"), I'm working on a small painting with a cute apple, a mixed media painting, a scarf that I'm crocheting, a scarf that I'm appliquéing, and I'm brainstorming a zine. Whew!
